The creek crossings on the northern half of the Overland Telegraph Line in particular are so clear it has been said by learned Cape York sages that you could place a newspaper on the bottom of the creek and still read the articles, if you were so inclined. Owing to a lack of newspapers in the area we were unable to test this claim. However, the grains of sand 5 feet under the water were clearly discernible, so the newspaper claims may indeed hold water.
